Tire buying basics

How to read your tire size

Look at the sidewall of your current tire. In 265/70R17, 265 is the width in millimeters, 70 is the sidewall height as a percentage of the width, R means radial, and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. Match this size when you shop.

When to replace your tires

Tires are considered worn out at 2/32 of an inch of tread. Quick check: put a penny in the groove with Lincoln's head down. If you can see the top of his head, it's time for new tires.

What the snowflake symbol means

A mountain with a snowflake on the sidewall (3PMSF) means the tire passed a standardized severe-snow traction test. It's a good sign if you drive in real winters.
